Nirvana's In Utero clean tones are hands down my favorite guitar tones. I've spent to last 2 year years trying to figure it out, and with the help of Earnie Bailey (Kurt Cobain's former guitar tech) I was able to finally get it. Here's the story behind it. Special shoutout to @isaiahgamervw7306 for helping me find pics of Kurts sound tech 2x12 cabinet!

The clean guitar tones on Nirvana's In Utero are some of the best guitar tones I've ever heard. Those tones are the whole reason I picked up a guitar. The distorted tones of In Utero are great too, but it's the cleans that do it for me. This video is about that, hope ya dig it!

I've been spending a lot of time focusing on aluminum guitars lately to try to dial in the rest of the tone for Nirvana's In Utero. I started experimenting and ordered aluminum from amazon and pieced together a Frankenstein build. It sounds awesome! This was a fun one.

I had the privilege and honor to do a seminar with Steve Albini that ended on May 4 of 2024. A few days before he passed. He was so focused while tracking the band Mint Mile and was so joyous to hear the participants’ music. I even served him some dinner because the stew dish was too heavy to pick up. At the end he said “and that’s all I know about recording” Never got to email him afterwards. RIP

I know what you mean on speakers as I have a pair of rare not as rare as these but rare Altec speakers the same kind Randy Rhoads used Ozzys first solo guitar player and to nail the sound you have to have those rare mid 70s speakers

I was recently watching Territorial Pissings Live at The Paramount and I couldn't help but notice a scratchy sound over the guitar intro. Then it mysteriously vanishes. You also can't see who was playing what because coincidentally, the lights fade out at that exact moment. It almost sounded like a guitar strumming with muted strings, but that can't be it right?

Wow, his appreciation towards you “burrowing in” on an album, and a sound. Such a special acknowledgement and a true shared passion between you two. I’m grateful you got to have this chat with him. May he rest in peace. Legendary and yet so modest. Thanks for giving us this content. Hope you are handling this loss well. Much love

Albini represented the objective ethics of music and the recording and production process, which is now all but extinct. No one else understood these things to the level he did. Losing him is such a massive gut punch to the world of music. He should have had another decade on this planet, at least. Tragic.

That's pretty wild that his kind words for you were among the last things he ever said to anyone. "A charming and beautiful expression of fan appreciation." It just sort of underscores what he was saying at the end, that it's worthy to just pursue your crazy obsessions because of how it impacts people - it brings things into the world that wouldn't have otherwise existed, like this cool discussion.

It's clear that this project of yours really resonated with him. It's touching that he went out of his way to sorta bolster or defend the process of what you're doing at the end. It seems totally unprompted, too. Just some reassurance like "hey what you're doing is cool, don't listen to them". I'm not sure you meant for this when you set out, but you're in the historical preservation field now.

Such an informative and bittersweet video. Steve is probably my favorite Engineer/Producer of all time. You’re doing God’s work by recreating with painstaking detail the In Utero Sound and more broadly the Steve Albini Sound. Very important work for posterity and preservation. Looking forward to your IR Pack and Veleno reproduction, and RIP to Steve. ❤❤❤ 😔

Man, beyond the fact that this is so dense with useful information, it’s really encouraging watching two people with no ego, just immense mutual interest, communicate with each other so charitably. This sort of interaction is humanity at its best. Albini was a great interview and always willing to go as deep as the person asked him. This is a very rare quality and, selfishly, it’s sad that the world won’t get another thirty years of wisdom and inspiration from him. Truly one of a kind.
